Dr. Yoon Joo Hwang, Assistant Professor of Bassoon and Music Theory at the University of Central Florida, has taught and performed throughout the U.S., Asia and Europe. She has been invited to present master class and to give lectures at Yonsei University, Hanyang University, Central Conservatory of Music Beijing, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Academy, Shenzhen Arts School, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), Austin Peay State University and University of Florida. She has performed solo recitals for the International Double Reed Society (IDRS), Florida Music Teachers Association and at Carnegie Hall in New York. Currently, she is member of the Tomo Bassoon Trio and the Duel Bassoon and Oboe Duo. 

Dr. Hwang has a diverse research portfolio and has presented her scholarly research regionally, nationally and internationally. In 2016, she was selected to give a presentation at the National College Music Society (CMS) Conference entitled “Global Transformation and Water Conservation: Mobilizing Musicians to Assuage the National Drought Crisis" in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and her article, “How Asian Identity Impacts Asian Performers in Classic Music: East Asians Meet Western Musical Culture” was published in the Journal of Ewha Music Research Institute. Dr. Hwang also recently spoke at the National College Music Society (CMS) conference in Vancouver, British Columbia on the topic of “Diversity and Inclusion: The Keys to Understanding, Mentoring, and Recruiting Asian International Students in a Competitive Global Marketplace,” at the 2019 Southern Regional Meeting of the College Music Society (CMS) on “Demanding Equity with Excellence: Asian Female Musicians Assert Their Voices, Reclaiming Their Identity in Music Performance,” and at the Research Institute of Asian Women at Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, where she presented a lecture entitled “Finding Our Voices as Women” in March of 2019. In 2020, Dr. Hwang’s research was focused on diversity and inclusion in music education. She was invited to presented a paper entitled “Diversity and Inclusion in Double Reed Pedagogy: A Survey of Programs in the United States, Korea and Germany” at the International Double Reed Society conference and gave a talk on the topic of “Diversity and Inclusion in Bassoon Pedagogy and Education: A Survey of Programs in the United States, Korea and Germany.”at the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, as well as a presentation entitled, “Diversity, Inclusion and Equity in Classical Music Education: Understanding Cultural and Traditional Influences in the U.S., Germany and Korea” at the national meeting of the College Music Society. 

Dr. Hwang has adjudicated the Florida Music Teachers National Association Young Artist competition, serves as a Junior Competition Coordinator for the Florida MTNA competition. She served as professional team for the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium at the Colburn School in Los Angeles, California. In November, 2019, Dr. Hwang was appointed to serve as a Vice President of Korean Relations on the Executive Board of the Asian Double Reed Association (ADRA), an organization devoted to bringing together double reed performers and teachers from throughout Asia. Dr. Hwang founded and hosted the International Bassoon Meetup and the National Bassoon Meetup to inspiring young bassoonists and to helping to advance music education for bassoonists. She holds the position of the Artistic Director of the University of Central Florida Bassoon Workshop.

Dr. Hwang attended the Asian Youth Orchestra Summer Program, the Asian Double Reed Association, the Beijing International Bassoon Festival, the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum, the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium and the Hidden Valley Music Seminars with Judith LeClair (Principal Bassoonist of the New York Philharmonic). 


Dr. Hwang earned a D.M.A. from the University of Colorado at Boulder under the guidance of Yoshi Ishikawa and an M.M. from UCLA, where she studied with Charles Coker and John Steinmetz. While studying at Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg in Germany, she worked with Günter Blahuschek of the Bamberger Symphoniker and Yoshi Tominaga of the Universität Mozarteum. She also studied at the University of Southern California with Shawn Mouser, Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and received a Performance Diploma from Boston University under Matthew Ruggiero, former Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
