Dr. Yoon Joo Hwang, Assistant Bassoon Professor at the University of Central Florida, has taught and performed throughout the United States, Asia and Europe. She has taught extensively in California, at UCLA, the Pasadena Conservatory of Music, the Idyllwild Summer Arts Academy and, additionally, at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2015, she was selected as a featured performer at the International Double Reed Society in Japan and she was selected for the IDRS in 2018 Granada, Spain. Recently, Dr. Hwang has served as a judge for Florida MTNA competitions and was invited to give master classes at the Yonsei University (Seoul, Korea), the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing, China), the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Academy (Shanghai, China) and the Shenzhen Arts School (Shenzhen, China).

Beyond her teaching and performing experiences, Dr. Hwang has a diverse research portfolio. In 2016, she was selected to give a presentation at the National College Music Society (CMS) Conference on the topic of “Global Transformation and Water Conservation: Mobilizing Musicians to Assuage the National Drought Crisis" in New Mexico, Santa Fe, and her article, "How Asian Identity Impacts Asian Performers in Classic Music: East Asians Meet Western Musical Culture" was accepted and published in the Journal of Ewha Music Research Institute. Dr. Hwang gave a talk at the National College Music Society (CMS) conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, entitled “Diversity and Inclusion: The Keys to Understanding, Mentoring, and Recruiting Asian International Students in a Competitive Global Marketplace.” Most notably, she established the Korean Double Reed Society in Seoul, Korea in 2017, and now serves as its Executive Coordinator.


Dr. Hwang attended the Asian Double Reed Association, the Beijing International Bassoon Festival, the International Summer Academy of the Mozarteum, the Meg Quigley Vivaldi Competition and Bassoon Symposium and the Hidden Valley Music Seminars with Judith LeClair (Principal Bassoonist of the New York Philharmonic). 


Dr. Hwang earned a Doctor of Musical Art degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder under the guidance of Yoshi Ishikawa and a Master of Music degree from UCLA, studied with John Steinmetz. As an undergraduate, she studied at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul, South Korea and Otto-Friedrich-Universität in Bamberg, Germany. While studying in Germany, she worked with Günter Blahuschek of the Bamberger Symphoniker and Yoshinori Tominaga of the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. Dr. Hwang studied at USC with Shawn Mouser, Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and holds a Performance Diploma from Boston University under Matthew Ruggiero, former Associate Principal Bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
