Yun-Ling Hsu (許韻玲), a native of Taiwan, earned a Diploma, Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate Degrees of Music in Piano Performance from The Ohio State University and Tainan Woman's College of Arts and Technology in Taiwan.  At Ohio State, she was privileged to have been one of the pupils of the legendary American pianist Earl Wild and the French-Canadian pianist André Laplante (silver medalist of Tchaikovsky Piano Competition). Hsu received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree with a distinguished doctoral dissertation on the transcriptions of Earl Wild for solo piano of Gershwin songs. Mr. Wild praised her as "an extremely talented pianist as well as a very meticulous and thorough musician."  Hsu was also coached by other pianists like Malcolm Bilson, Robert Levin and Veronica Jochum.  Six consecutive years at OSU, she held one graduate fellowship and three graduate teaching assistantships in private/ group piano teaching, chamber music and accompanying, and was nominated for the award of Excellence in Teaching. 

An active solo, chamber performer and pedagogue, Dr. Hsu extensively performs and teaches master classes in concert halls, music schools and universities in the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America as well as adjudicates in competitions/auditions and presents in state/national teacher's conferences. She has been invited internationally to:

  • Dongfang Huiguang International Consulting Institute, Beijing, China
  • SDMK Concert SeriesDanish National Academy of Music concert hall, Denmark
  • Vianden International Summer Music Festival and School, Luxembourg

  • InterHarmony International Summer Music Festival, Germany and Italy
  • Sala Ignacio Cervantes Concert Hall, Havana, Cuba                                                                                                                 (In the fall of 2015, Dr. Hsu was one of the first artists to be invited by the office of Cuban Musical Heritage to perform at the magnificent historical Sala Ignacio Cervantes Concert Hall in Havana, ranked among the three most prestigious in Cuba. She has been invited back to perform in Sala Ignacio Cervantes.)

Dr. Hsu has been hailed for "a formidable mastery of piano technique" (by North Carolina recital review), she is not only an outstanding soloist but also a highly sought-after collaborative artist. She performs in recitals extensively and has performed with top musicians worldwide, including:

  • Carsten Svanberg (Danish trombone soloist)
  • Inke Kesseler (Dutch classical pianist)

  • Liu Hui (Chinese tenor/ President - Shenyang Conservatory of Music, Shenyang, China)
  • Zhou Qiuyu (Chinese singer - Central Drama Academy, Beijing, China)
  • Zhou Ning (Chinese horn professor -  Art Institute of South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China)
  • Principle players from New York Philharmonic (Joseph Alessi - trombone, Stanley Drucker - retired clarinetist, Philip Meyers - horn)
  • Principle player from Chicago Symphony Orchestra (John Hagstrom - trumpet)
  • Kendall Betts (horn - former principle horn of Minnesota Symphony)
  • Michel Debost (flutist - retired chair/ professor of Oberlin College Conservatory of Music)
  • Robert Sullivan (trumpeter - Northwestern University and former principle trumpet of Cincinnati Symphony) 
  • Kenneth Tse (Chinese-American saxophone soloist and professor of University of Iowa)

Besides appearing as a solo and chamber musician, she has served as a pianist with the Florida Orchestra in Tampa, Brevard Symphony Orchestra, Bach Festival Orchestra of Winter Park, and currently performs with Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. 

Professor Hsu joined the music faculty at University of Central Florida since fall of 2005. As the Head of the Piano Studies at UCF, Professor Hsu teaches graduate and undergraduate piano majors applied lessons, pedagogy, ensemble, chamber music and literature classes. She has initiated UCF Piano Day and brought international-known artists to campus for master classes, recitals and collaborative events, and also initiated UCF All-Steinway Summer Piano Camp for young pianists age 11 to 18. She specializes in retraining injured pianists and her teaching focus on injury prevention, health and well-being for pianists, and mind-body connections for increased artistry and creativity. More than 17 years of research and practice of injury-preventive piano technique with various methods,10 years of yoga/ fitness training, and 2 years of study of the Alexander Technique with Dr. William Conable.

November 18-26, 2015 – International performances in Cuba.  Invited by Dra. Miriam Escudero, Director of Musical Heritage Cabinet Esteban Salas (Office of the Historian of Havana) to perform a cultural exchange piano recital in magnificent historical Sala Ignacio Cervantes Concert Hall in Havana.  Also visited Havana’s National Schools of Arts (ENA), the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), Lyceum Mozartiano de La Habana (“Mozart Lyceum of Havana”, the piano department of the Instituto Superior de Arte), University of Sancti-Spiritus, Sancti-Spiritus’s Casa de la Musica (“House of Music”) and Ernesto Lecuona School of Music.
