Summer Opera Institute

Nine-Day Program!

Middle School: 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
High School/College: Noon – 5:30 p.m.

UCF Opera and Florida Opera Theatre are proud to co-sponsor this intensive nine-day program for middle school, high school, and college singers interested in exploring classical vocal music and developing their vocal potential and performing abilities. The program is perfect for singers who are interested in pursuing a music education or performance career. Singers will participate in Stage Movement Classes, Music Coachings, Voice Lessons, Diction Classes, Vocal and Dramatic Improvisation, Performance Classes, Audition Preparation Classes [High School/College], “What’s Opera?” Classes [Middle School], Master Classes, and a Final Concert (free and open to the public). Faculty includes Robin Jensen [FOT], Thomas Potter [UCF], Allen McCoy [Palm Beach Atlantic University] and Kathleen Miller. Additional distinguished professionals to be announced.

Sax Boot Camp is a three-day, intensive program of instrument-playing basics, small/medium group playing, informative presentations and jazz basics. Morning yoga and aerobics will be followed by breakout sessions. Daily master classes and individual coaching appointments provide continual and concentrated input.

Also, the Flute Pedagogy Course and Flute Master Class are designed for advanced players and professionals.

Summer String Workshop

Cost: Non-Resident: $400 (includes lunch), Resident: $750 (Housing & 3 meals daily)

The Summer String Workshop offers string students the opportunity to develop their playing talents in a special atmosphere that is both challenging and fun. They enjoy a one-of-a-kind experience in which they can:

  • learn music from the orchestral repertoire
  • perform in large and small orchestras and chamber ensembles
  • receive private lessons with talented faculty
  • experience high-level supervised practice time
  • take part in master classes with artist-level teachers
  • enjoy planned evening activities

INSTRUCTORS

Arthur Pranno - Director of String Studies at Florida Southern College, conductor of the Florida Southern Symphony Orchestra, artistic director of the Brevard Symphony Youth Orchestra, and a much in-demand clinician throughout Florida and the Midwestern and Southwestern United States.

Mark Thielen - conductor of the Imperial Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Director in Polk County Schools for 32 years and a much sought-after clinician and conductor for county, state, and regional level honors orchestras.

Michael Sedloff - Member of the string faculties of Florida Southern College and Polk County Schools, and is a founding member of the Hollingsworth Trio. He has a Masters degree from the University of Michigan.

Anne Parrette - is in her fourth year on the faculty of florida southern college as cello instructor. Previously, her career spanned thirteen years of teaching in Florida's public school orchestra programs, half of that time spent developing performing arts high school orchestra programs. Ms. Parrette is an active adjudicator for state and district MPAs and is in demand across the state as a freelance cellist. Ms. Parrette is a member of Who's Who of American Teachers and of American Women and is a member of Sigma Alpha Iota, and Pi Beta Phi.

Mallet & Percussion Camp

Sunday, July 14, 2013 - Saturday, July 20, 2013

Campus Location: Rehearsal Hall, Auditorium(116)
Cost: Tuition: $400 through June 14, $475 after; Housing (optional): $196

This one-week course is designed for the college-level or advanced high school percussionist. Features master classes, concerts, and instruction on a variety of subjects.

Camp provides a unique opportunity to study with Ney Rosauro and learn his approach to composition and his performing techniques on marimba, vibraphone, and other instruments.

Also, study with UCF faculty members Jeff Moore, internationally recognized percussion clinician, lecturer, and soloist, Kirk Gay, world-class timpanist and orchestral musician, and Thad Anderson, percussionist, composer, and contemporary/electroacoustic music specialist.

Artie & Denise Summer Symposium

All-State Preparation Clinic

Saturday, August 24, 2013; 9:30am - 4:45pm

Campus Location: Performing Arts Center - Music, Conference Room(143)
Cost: Free, pre-registration required

UCF Music presents a free clinic on how to prepare for the Florida Bandmasters Association 2014 All-State Band and Jazz Band audition and the Florida Orchestra Association 2014 All-State Orchestra audition.

The clinic is FREE, but pre-registration is required.

  • UCF applied music faculty and guest instrumentalists will offer clinics on FBA 2014 All-State Band and Jazz Band and FOA All-State Orchestra requirements for 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12 grades
  • Emphasis will be placed on All-State exercise preparation, tone production, technique development, scales, sight-reading strategies, and audition readiness
  • Students should bring instruments, All-State music, and be prepared to play
  • UCF will provide all the percussion instruments. Students are required to bring their sticks, mallets and music.
